Calculation

Data & Bandwidth

Convert a file size between bits, bytes, MB, GB, TB, and the 1,024-based KiB, MiB, and GiB units. Convert a bandwidth rate such as Mbps to MB/s, or estimate how long a file takes to transfer at a steady rate.

Quick start

  1. 1

Choose storage, bandwidth, or transfer time

Storage is a file size. Bandwidth is a rate. Transfer time uses both.

  2. 2

    Enter the number

Type the size or the rate you already have.

  3. 3

    Pick the units

Decimal units such as MB and GB use 1,000. Binary units such as MiB and GiB use 1,024.

  4. 4

    Read the table

The chosen result is highlighted, and the same value is listed in the other units.

Features

Storage

Move between MB, GB, TB, bits, and the 1,024-based binary units.

Bandwidth

Turn Mbps into MB/s, or any other bits-per-second rate into bytes per second.

Transfer time

Estimate how long a file takes at a steady rate.

Specifications

Storage

Use cases

  • Check how many GB a disk allocation is in TB.
  • Turn a 100 Mbps link into MB/s.
  • Estimate how long a 10 GB file takes at that rate.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 1 MB not 1,024 KB?

MB uses 1,000 KB. MiB uses 1,024 KiB. Both are listed so a disk label and an operating system total can be compared.

Does transfer time include overhead?

No. It divides the size by a steady rate. Real transfers can take longer.
